Atoms Football Optimistic About Upcoming Season

After ending 2011 with a record of 1-9, the Atoms are hoping to improve in 2012 with a mix of new and returning players and a new mindset.

After a disappointing 2011 season, the varsity football team is looking to put up betters numbers this year.

“I feel really good about where we’re at,” said head coach Mike Scott. “We’ve got good numbers and depth.”

The Atoms, who were 1-9 last year, have 25 seniors, 14 juniors, and nine sophomores on the roster this year. Scott said the team had a great pre-season camp, but “a few of our guys got banged up.” The injuries, which Scott said are not serious, have not dampened his optimism about the upcoming season.

“Nobody was happy about last year, but we’re not going to let that happen again,” said Scott. “Offensively, we’re pretty formidable if we get everybody back and healthy. Defensively, we’re making strides. Once we find the right rotation with our front four, we’ll be settled. I think we got some guys that can make plays."

The Atoms spent a lot of time this summer rebuilding their confidence and evaluating areas for improvement. In addition to increasing their workouts, the staff held talks with Washington Redskins players and also hosted a passing league this summer to help energize the players. The overall affect on the time was positive, according to Scott.

Scott also credited a handful of seniors, including Defensive/Offensive Lineman Bryan Jefferson, Running Back Jack Johnson with helping to create a confident, positive attitude on the field and in the locker room.

“Our team leadership is fantastic. The senior class has done a good job. I’m very proud of them,” said Scott.

Looking ahead to Friday’s game against Fairfax High School, the Atoms head into the series with a 34-14-2 lead over the Rebels since 1954. Scott said he and his team are ready to go.

“I think it’s going to be a good match. It’s going to be a hard-hitting, old-fashioned Annandale versus Fairfax game,” said Scott. “They fly around the ball on defense and offensively, they’ve got some guys. They’re throwing more this year. They’re going to grind it out and we’re going mix it up. I like my chances. I like my guys. I think they’re going to step up.”

The Atoms face the Rebels for their season opener on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at 3501 Rebel Run in Fairfax. Tickets are $5.
