From the Files of a Chocolate Chip Cookie Addict

Money may not buy happiness, but it buys chocolate chip cookies and that's what's important. Can you imagine a world without chocolate chip cookies?

I don’t remember the exact day I fell in love with the chocolate chip cookie, but we’ve been together a very long time. I‘ve even tried to think of ways to turn my love for chocolate chip cookies into a career – traveling the country like Rachel Ray, looking for the best chocolate chip cookies. Then I’d write about the best and the worst for a consumer report of the nation’s best chocolate chip cookies.

In my search for the ultimate chocolate chip cookie, I regret to report that Annandale lacks a good chocolate chip cookie. This is a travesty! My only recourse is to bake them myself.  So, if anyone knows where a delectable chocolate chip cookie can be purchased in Annandale, hook me up.

But wait!

Like a wine snob, I am a chocolate chip cookie snob, and not just any cookie will do.

The first rule is: no packaged mass market chocolate chip cookies – although, in an emergency, Chunky Chips Ahoy make a tolerable substitute. And they must be freshly baked. And BIG and crowded with chocolate chips (either milk chocolate or semisweet chocolate), and WITHOUT nuts. You may disagree, but the nuts really just get in the way.

Some people are shocked to learn I even eat chocolate chip cookies because I am thin and in good physical shape. It’s very simple - I work out so I can have my chocolate chip cookies. In truth, without running and chocolate chip cookies, I think I would lose my mind.

My friends laugh about my obsession with chocolate chip cookies, but they can’t really understand the complexity of the relationship.

My mother was recently an unfortunate victim of what happens when chocolate chip cookies are at stake. She had her eyes on the chocolate chip cookies that my good friend brought me while I was recuperating from surgery. These are my absolute favorite chocolate chip cookie, and they are only sold in one or two places around town and you practically have to take out a loan to buy them. But they are so worth it. I know she’s my mother and all, but let’s just say the scene got ugly as nothing was going to come between me and those cookies, and leave it at that.

But this obsession can get lonely. So I wonder, are there others like me out there?

There are beer fests and wine tastings, cupcake stores and food trucks, but where’s the chocolate chip cookie?

There are AA meetings and rehab centers, but can you find a 12-step program for the chocolate chip cookie addict? No.

Of course, I’ve tried to break up with the chocolate chip cookie, but it never lasts. I’m helplessly co-dependent on these blasted confections. So I have come to accept that the chocolate chip cookie reigns and yield to its power – forever in pursuit of the elusive all-time best chocolate chip cookie.
