Census Data Shows Growth in Annandale
Between the 2000 Census and 2010, the total population in Annandale grew by 2,855 persons
Based off of the 2010 census numbers released for Virginia, Annandale, similar to Fairfax County, has seen a growth in population.
The census splits up what the county considers to be the boundaries of Annandale into three census designated places: Wakefield, Woodburn and Annandale. The Annandale CDP encompasses more of what’s considered the Central Business District of Annandale versus the more residential area of Annandale, which the Wakefield and Woodburn CDPs largely consist of [see map].
The sum of the 2010 Annandale, Woodburn and Wakefield CDP populations is 60,763 persons, showing a growth in Annandale of 2,855 persons. Because Annandale’s geography has changed since 2000, making comparisons between census data from 2000 and 2010 is nearly impossible.

“Boundaries change frequently in the census geographies and the geographies change every Census. Not all of them, but quite a few," said Anne Pickford Cahill, manager, economic and demographic research with the Fairfax County Dept. of Neighborhood and Community Services.
“Annandale is not an incorporated town. Incorporated towns like Vienna and Clifton, those boundaries stay the same unless they annex a piece of the county,” said Cahill. “But when you’re not incorporated, the boundaries are a lot more mushy.”

In 2000, the total population based on the sum of the three CDP’s was 57,908 persons. Since then, there has been at least one noticeable boundary change on the map and the latest geography for the Wakefield CDP has changed to include an additional area that was not part of the 2000 Wakefield CDP.
The total population for just the 2010 Annandale CDP is 41,008. Of that total, 39,317 of those persons are white; 20,670 are black or African-American; 10,103 are Asian; 11,326 are Hispanic or Latino; and 4,746 are other races. The remainder of the population just for the Annandale CDP is a combination of two or more races [see screencap for complete data].
Total population for the Wakefield CDP is 11,275. Of that, 10,974 are white, 8,698 are black or African-American, 1,870 are Asian, and 821 are Hispanic or Latino.
For the Woodburn CDP, the total population is 8,480. Of that, 8,109 are white; 5,431 are black or African-American; 1,617 are Asian and 1,376 are Hispanic or Latino.
Although redistricting in the county is based off of census numbers, Cahill said redistricting for 2011 solely affects elected districts, not supervisor districts, CDP’s or census tracts. According to Merni Fitzgerald, director of public affairs for Fairfax County, the Fairfax County 2011 Advisory Citizen Redistricting Committee will not submit a report to the Board of Supervisors until March.
Between 2000 and 2010, Fairfax County gained more than 110,000 people, increasing to 1,081,726 persons from 969,749. “Everybody talks about how fast Loudoun has grown. Percentage-wise it’s huge, but if you look at the actual number of people they added, it’s 140,000 which isn’t a whole lot more than what we added. We just started from a bigger base," Cahill said.
Asians are the county’s largest minority group, commanding 20 percent, with Latinos and Hispanic population coming in a close second at 15 percent. The white non-Hispanic population of the county decreased from 58 percent to 55 percent.
