Evolution of Art: PHILLIPS School "Picasso Lessons" Fundraiser Exhibit

THIS SHOW IS A FUNDRAISING EVENT. PRINTS OF ARTWORK ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE ART PROGRAM AT THE PHILLIPS SCHOOL!

About the Exhibit:

This art lesson was based on Picasso’s periodic portrait style focusing on line, shape, and color. The students were asked to picture themselves from two angles—full front and profile—and draw what they think they look like having both elements in one “face.” They were encouraged to use color boldly and creatively. The results are vibrant, expressive self-portraits that show off each student’s individual personality.

For over 40 years, Phillips has provided a place where children left behind in traditional settings can get the support and education they need to become successful, responsible adults. Phillips provides a fresh start, helping children develop critical life skills so they too can enjoy respect, acceptance, and personal achievement.

At Phillips Schools, at the core of our philosophy is that whatever missteps a student took yesterday; he or she can do better today. Phillips offers special education at two non-public, non-profit day schools for students for whom public or other specialized schools were not successful. We increase the chances for success through highly individualized learning programs targeted to each child's specific needs while also highlighting their unique gifts. Phillips School ~ Annandale serves students ages 6–21 from Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

The art program at Phillips School ~ Annandale is designed to stimulate creativity, develop fine motor skills, and instill in students a basic appreciation of the fine and visual arts. Students explore a variety of two-dimensional and sculptural media such as pencil, paint, oil pastel, clay, textiles, and collage. Each class lesson is based on a work of art, illustration, or artist, and discussed in conjunction with a studio project. The program’s overall objective is to teach visual thinking through art concepts.
