Poetry Slam @ The Athenaeum

Join the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association for the first in a series of quarterly spoken word poetry events: WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE.  Shelly Bell, Director of Seven City Art Society will produce and host the events. The first WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. on the sixteenth will include a feature performance by artist Ms. Wise, along with Shelly and other talented spoken word poets.  For a $10 entry fee, attendees are able to compete, slam style, for a $100 prize at the end of the evening.

Spoken word poetry is the art of bringing written works to life through performance. Spoken word artists create a poetic theatrical experience that engages audiences of non-poetry and poetry lovers alike. The works are valued for their brutal honesty; non-traditional use of poetic conventions, words, and sounds; and fresh creativity. HBO's Def Poetry Jam and Brave New Voices have increased the mainstream popularity of spoken workd.

Additional WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. performance events are scheduled at the Athenaeum for Friday, January 20, Friday, April 13, and Friday, July 20.  Admission is free and the programs start at 7 pm.
