Former Annandale Basketball Coach Harper Faces Misdemeanor Charges

Harper was arrested on Sunday and left his position as coach at the high school on Monday

's varsity basketball head coach Anthony Harper was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 4 and faces misdemeanor charges for profane swearing or intoxication in public and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the weekly arrest list from the Fairfax County Police Department.

The arrest information comes just two days after Harper announced he was from his position as coach. The AHS student newspaper, The A-Blast, first reported the news on Tuesday. They quoted a student, Michael Henessey, as saying Harper told the students he was unable to coach because of "his actions."

Harper informed the team of his decision during practice on Monday, a day after his arrest. According to Fairfax County Public Schools, he is still an FCPS employee. Annandale Patch has reached out directly to Harper for comment.

Harper has coached the Atoms since 2003 and has served as head coach since 2006. He has a record of 68-54. The A-Blast reports Assistant Coach Bobby Terry is the interim head coach in Harper's absence, and Junior Varsity Coach Daniel Porter has been promoted to the assistant coach position.

The boys varsity basketball team is 0-2 so far this season, most recently . The boys varsity team will face Washington-Lee on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
