LDS Congregations Conducting Food Drive for Area Food Banks Sept. 13

Event commemorates "Day to Serve."

Provided:

Day to Serve began in 2012 as a collaboration between the governors of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the mayor of Washington, DC. The governors set aside political differences and worked together to feed the hungry and improve their communities. They invited all citizens, faith groups, businesses and community organizations to join the cause. They encouraged the creativity of individuals, families, groups, faith groups, and communities to meet the needs seen in their own backyards.

To commemorate this year’s Day to Serve, on Saturday September 13, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) will be collecting food at several Giant Food and Shoppers food stores in the Annandale -Springfield - Burke - Fairfax areas from approximately 10am to 2pm for food banks administered by Ecumenical Community for Christ (ECHO), Annandale Community for Christ (ACCA), Food for Others, and Our Daily Bread.

“We look forward to “Day to Serve” every year because it gives us the opportunity to get to know our neighbors while helping some of our area food banks, which do so much to support the less fortunate in our community. All people of good will do not like to see anyone, especially children, going hungry. This effort gives everyone a chance to do something about this problem.”, stated Douglas Bush, President of the Annandale Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

You will find volunteers at entrances and exits of the stores with flyers detailing the needs of the food bank to which food collected will be donated. Our area food banks have been hit hard by the influx of people new to the area and the challenging economy. Their shelves are depleted of much needed commodities. Any and all donations will be sincerely appreciated.
