Man Dies After Shooting Self In Fairfax Hospital Room

The man had reportedly shot himself and refused to give up his gun when police arrived.

ANNANDALE, VA—A man has died after shooting himself inside Inova Fairfax Hospital Tuesday night, Fairfax County Police say.

Officers were called to the hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute around 8:47 p.m. for a report of a patient with a gun. The man shot himself at least once before police arrived.

Police found the man alone in a hospital room refusing to give up his gun. Officers worked to "peacefully de-escalate the situation," and they entered the room to provide medical aid an hour later.

The man was taken to the hospital’s trauma center and died a short time later. He was identified as Thomas Wimmer, 64, of Ashburn. No one else was injured.

The medical examiner will be performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
