NCCA Prepares Breakfast for Braddock Elementary Students and Faculty

In recognition of National Breakfast Week, 850 Braddock Elementary School students, their families and school staff ate breakfast prepared by the Washington, D.C. based organization

This morning before SOL exams, students and their families at in Annandale were treated to a healthy breakfast prepared by the Nation’s Capital Chef’s Association (NCCA), the Washington, D.C. chapter of the non-profit organization American Culinary Federation. The event was organized for National Breakfast Week.

Breakfast was served from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the school cafeteria to faculty and staff and food choices included whole grain pancakes, turkey sausage, fruit, French toast, and cereal. General Mills, ConAgra, Nick’s, Keany Produce, Pinnacle and Hadley Farms supplied the food for the event.

The NCCA has served breakfast during National School Breakfast Week for the past six years in public schools in Northern Virginia. This year, they worked with Fairfax County Food Service Director Penny McConnell to choose a Fairfax County school where the students are part of families in need and organize the event. Close to 64 percent of students at Braddock are on free and reduced meal plans.

According to 2010 Capital Area Food Bank statistics, over 109,000 residents in Fairfax County are experiencing hunger.
