Portable Sauna Starts Fire at Springfield Home

Family of four was displaced by fire last night that did about $52,000 in damage.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Thursday, Jan. 8, at approximately 12:55 a.m., in the Springfield area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located in the 5400 block of Kempsville Street.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the ranch-style home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an interior fire attack and quickly extinguished the fire in the master bathroom. One of the occupants was alerted by the smell of smoke.

All four of the occupants were able to escape the home unharmed. The home did not have any working smoke alarms. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. Two adults and two children have been displaced. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $52,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An electrical anomaly in a portable sauna caused the fire.
