Seliskars Set New State Records at Swim Championships

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology boys team placed third overall on Saturday.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s Stephen and Andrew Seliskar broke state records at the Virginia AAA swimming and diving championships last Saturday at George Mason University’s McKay Natatorium.

Senior Stephen Seliskar set a new boys’ 100-yard backstroke record with a time of 50.08 and took third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.41. Freshman Andrew Seliskar, Stephen’s younger brother, broke the state record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:49.83 and also took first place in the boys’ 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.64.

While the Oakton High School girls and Virginia Beach’s Cox High School took home the state titles, the Jefferson boys’ team finished third overall with 146 points. Oakton boys took second with 168 points.

The Seliskars also helped the boys place third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.46 along with junior Reese Frerichs and sophomore Miles Oakley. Jefferson also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.22 thanks to swimmers senior Nathan Hughes, Oakley and the Seliskar brothers.

For the girls, Jefferson senior Katie Bennett placed seventh with a time of 58.28. In other local results, Falls Church High School junior Laura Schwartz placed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.57.
