Springfield Man Dies in Wednesday Morning Crash on I-395

A Springfield man has died after an early-morning crash on I-395 caused by an alleged reckless driver, according to Virginia State Police.

Ernest Campbell, 81, of Springfield died in the crash, which happened when a driver—now charged with reckless driving—struck Campbell's truck.

The crash happened on northbound I-395, just south of Exit 3 for Route 236 (Little River Turnpike to the west and Duke Street to the east).

Virginia State Police Trooper G.J. Goldstein was called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday. 

A 2006 Subaru Legacy was heading northbound on I-395 when it ran off the left side of the highway and struck the guardrail, police said in the release. The impact caused the Subaru to cross back into the northbound lanes and strike Campbell's northbound 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup truck. The pickup truck then ran off the right side of I-395, struck the guardrail and overturned.

Campbell was transported to Alexandria Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Subaru, Edward Flores-Curiel, 22, of Nevada, was not hurt, nor was his adult female passenger. Police have charged Flores-Curiel with reckless driving.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
