Students Are Excited To Be Part Of "Build A Child's Library" Event

Through its Literacy for Kids Program, Assistance League of Northern Virginia provides one-on-one reading tutoring at several schools each week and donates new books to students at selected schools. The nonprofit recently held a “Build-a-Child’s Library” book fair at a Title 1 school in Manassas for 580 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Each student was allowed to select a book from the new books displayed in the school library on tables specific to grade levels – including a bilingual book table. Assistance League member volunteers and the school librarians helped the students find the books they would like. Volunteers then stamped the selected books and the students signed their name in the books to indicate it was theirs. Several students asked if they could take their book home and were delighted to learn that they could! An Assistance League bookmark was inserted into each book and the students really liked that.

A 2nd grade class presented the volunteers with a “thank you” poster they had helped their teacher create, with drawings from the students attached. The poster said “I feel excited when I finish the book.” Another class returned to the library in the afternoon to present the volunteers with “thank you” cards they created. One student’s card said that the book fair was probably the best part of her day. One young student had a particular book in mind and a volunteer searched all of the boxes until she found it for him and he was thrilled! It was a great day for the students and Assistance League’s member volunteers!
