Most Bailey’s Crossroads Rotarians would agree that one of our club’s favorite community service projects is the Thanksgiving food basket distribution to people in the Culmore area of Fairfax County. We distributed 105 meals to recipients identified by Bailey’s ES, Bailey’s Upper School, Glasgow MS, Bailey’s Community Center and the Northern Virginia Literacy Council. Our club would like to thank the Justice High School Interact Club (Judy and 13 members), Bailey’s Community Center (Director Ceola and kids), and the Aldi Super Market at Bailey’s Crossroads (Manager Ashley and team) for making our 2019 TG meals program a success!
The food and gift cards (each family received a gift card to buy the meat product of their choice) were bought at the Bailey’s Crossroads Aldi store on Friday Nov. 22. The food was transported to the Bailey’s Community Center where it was bagged by students and Rotarians for distribution.
Turns out we needed more green beans, and during the wait/pause in meal packaging, volunteers were breaking up the empty cardboard boxes. Past President Steven Wasko started singing, “Breaking up is hard to do.” Other Rotarians joined in. Kids looked on curiously. One Rotarian heard about the singing and said “I am looking forward to Steven's rendition of ‘Waiting on Green Beans’ sung to the tune of ‘Walking on Sunshine.’”
On Saturday morning, Nov. 23, Rotarians, Interact students, friends and community members met at the Woodrow Wilson Library in Falls Church where the food bags were packed in cars and delivered to families.
