Thomas Jefferson Students Win Big at VHSL Contest

The 11 students from TJHSST were part of a large group of winners from Fairfax County Public Schools

Eleven students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology took first, second, and third place honors in the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) Writing, Photography, Design and Journalism contest. Each of the TJHSST students placed in the Group AAA Newspaper category for the following:

  • Rabia Idrees, third place in News, Straight News-News Feature
  • Jennifer Walter, third place in News, Sports News
  • Anna Hicks and Noah Yoo, first place in Feature, Human Interest-Personality
  • Colleen Marshall, second place; Sunny Kim, third place in Feature, In-Depth-Informative
  • Bart Bachman, first place and third place in Editorials
  • Arya Dahal, second place in Bylined Personal Opinion-Column
  • Shayna Hume, first place;  Tahmina Achekzai, second place in Review
  • Jennifer Walter, first place in News-Feature
  • Rabia Idrees, tied for first place in Front Page Layout
  • Anna Hicks and Noah Yoo, first place in Inside Page Layout-Spread
  • Tara Gupta, first place in Editorial Cartooning

According to a news release from Fairfax County Public Schools, the eligible publications are from the 2010-2011 school year. A total of 1,217 entries were submitted for the competition from 56 student publications. The selected winners were chosen based on "meeting standards for outstanding journalism, then on the basis of quality."
