Video: Fairfax County Police Department Honor Captain Tom Bernal
Tuesday, June 28, 2011 marks 10 years since his death
Capt. Tom Bernal was honored by members of the Fairfax County Police Department during a dedication ceremony on Tuesday afternoon held at the department's here in Annandale.
Bernal, a commander of the Traffic Division of the police department, died in the line of duty after his motorcycle was struck during a training exercise on June 28, 2001. Today, June 28 marked the 10th anniversary of his death.
Surrounded by Bernal's family and friends, Motor Squad officers and many more police officers, Colonel David M. Rohrer, chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, said a few remarks to the crowd. Fairfax County Chairman Sharon Bulova and Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey also attended the ceremony.

A portrait of Bernal, painted by retired state trooper Donald Poore Sr., was unveiled during the ceremony. The department plans to honor all fallen officers with similar portraits through an effort organized by Rohrer's former administrative assistant Patti Smylie and Shirley Jones, retired deputy clerk with Fairfax County. Bernal's portrait is the first to be completed.
