Call for Youth Jazz Musicians Seeking International Travel
Big Band to Perform in Cuba in March 2016
Annandale, VA – Virginia Music Adventures (VMA), Northern Virginia’s premier jazz education program, has opened the application window for its unique, after-school music programs for area youth. This year, acceptance into VMA’s Annandale Jazz Ambassadors, which celebrates the golden age of jazz by performing music of vanguard American big band composers, will include travel and performance in Havana, and other cities in Cuba.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young musicians to be a part of history and grow both musically and culturally,” said VMA’s Music Director Jon Laine. “The Annandale Jazz Ambassadors will electrify the Cuban people with classic American jazz, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with local musicians.”
Student musicians aged 11-18 are encouraged to apply and audition for openings in VMA’s three band options, which vary based on skill level and age. Each band provides the highest quality jazz instruction from staff and invited clinicians. All bands have the opportunity to travel and perform for live audiences while experiencing exotic locations with fellow musicians and learning responsibility, accountability, and musicianship. In preparation for its tour in Havana, Cuba in March 2016, the Annandale Jazz Ambassadors – a big-band style group consisting of developed and advanced musicians – will explore Latin and Cuban themed music during a season that begins this October. The Ambassadors, as well as VMA’s Wakefield Jazz Workshop and Chapel Square Combo, perform locally from December through May, in addition to their domestic and international travel performances.
Each year the Annandale Jazz Ambassadors travel the world with a message of peace and friendship shared through their award-winning musical performances, clinics, master classes, and cultural exchange programs.
