2 Pipe Bombs Recovered; Man Accused Of Making Death Threats

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Police recovered two pipe bombs Tuesday and charged a local man with making death threats and possessing explosive materials, according to a police release.

Officers were dispatched around 7:47 p.m., on Monday to the 1000 block of N. Filmore St. for the report of a man making threats at a restaurant. Two witnesses told police that after the man had joined them for drinks, he made threatening remarks about harming people that he knew. The man then opened his backpack and displayed a two-piece shotgun made from pipes and a bag of ammunition. Once they'd left the restaurant, the witnesses reported the incident to the police.

Following an investigation, police identified the suspect as Ryan Bosnick, 34, of Arlington. They then made contact with a woman who one of the targets of Bosnick's threats. The woman told police Bosnick had been sending her threatening text messages.

Police took Bosnick into custody Tuesday afternoon, as he was walking in the area of Fairfax Drive and N. Stuart Street. They then executed a search warrant around 3:40 p.m., at Bosnick's residence in the 1100 block of N. Stuart Street. They found a homemade sawed-off shotgun and two improvised explosive devices, commonly known as pipe bombs. The Arlington County Fire Department Bomb Squad assisted in removing the devices from the residence.

Representatives from the FBI's Washington Field Office responded to the scene on Tuesday. This remains an ongoing joint criminal investigation.

Police charged Bosnick with two counts of possession of explosive materials or devices, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and making threats of death or bodily injury to a person. He is currently being held without bound at the Arlington County Detention Facility.
