400 Landscapers Beautify Arlington National Cemetery At Service Event

More than 400 landscapers from 36 states gathered to spruce up Arlington National Cemetery at the 21st annual Renewal and Remembrance day.

ARLINGTON, VA — Hundreds of people gathered to helped beautify Arlington National Cemetery at the 21st annual Renewal and Remembrance volunteer day Monday. The event is held annually by The National Association of Landscape Professionals to honor America's veterans and keep the sacred grounds clean.

More than 400 landscapers from 36 states joined in to help spruce up the cemetery, which is over 150 years old and managed by the Army.

"We have almost a waiting list of people that want to come because this work is really so meaningful," Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Association of Landscape Professionals, told WJLA. “They’re coming here to create an extra sense of beauty to honor the soldiers and their families, and create a sense of peace.”

Volunteers help repair and install irrigation systems, install cabling systems to protect trees during storms, aerated more than 80 acres of turf and planted flowers throughout the grounds, WJLA reports.

"We want to make sure they know that we're refusing to forget the sacrifices that were made," longtime volunteer Phil Fogarty said.
