Amazon Gets More Than $2.8 Billion From NoVa, Others: Report

Crystal City actually got the best deal of them all to land Amazon, with just $819 million in incentives offered.

ARLINGTON, VA -- Critics for Amazon's nationwide competition for its second headquarters warned that the online retail giant would demand a king's ransom to place their second headquarters -- and the $5 billion in investment and 50,000 jobs that come with it -- in the winning location. And it appears they were right.

The Washington Post reports that Amazon will score a staggering $2.8 billion incentives from Crystal City and New York, who will each receive half of the second headquarters. Crystal City shelled out $819 million of that total, whereas New York paid $1.85 billion for the privilege of having the other headquarters in Long Island City.

That was actually a steal compared to the sky-high packages offered elsewhere. The Post reported that Maryland offered $8.5 billion and New Jersey was prepared to give away $7 billion. However, Amazon appeared to love Crystal City too much to take the money.

Both headquarters are expected to create 25,000 jobs with an average pay of more than $150,000 per year, and many of the incentives offered are contingent on Amazon delivering that many positions and more.

Nashville was the surprise entry into the mix, offering $102 million in incentives and getting a consolation prize of a new operations center and 5,000 jobs.
