ARLINGTON, VA — Even though votes continue to be counted in Tuesday's dual primary election in Virginia, the Associated Press officially declared winners in the GOP Senate and the 8th Congressional District Races.
In the Arlington County Board primary race, incumbent Democrat Matt Ferranti was leading his two opponents James DeVita and Julie Farnam at the end of the first round of voting. The county board race is being conducted using ranked choice voting.
Republican Bert Mizusawa was declared the GOP's candidate for U.S. Senate on the Nov. 3 ballot. He defeated challengers David E. Williams and Kim Farington. Mizusawa will face incumbent Senator Mark Warner (D) in November
U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D) was declared the victor in the 8th Congressional District primary, defeating four other Democrats: Mo Seifeldein, Adam M. Dunigan, Michael Christian Duffin, and Lorena Thorne Bruner.
Beyer will go on to face Republican candidate Tony Sabio in the general election. Located just outside Washington, D.C., the 8th District is overwhelmingly blue. Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger won 80% of the vote there in last year's election.
Beyer, who was first elected to Congress in 2014, served two terms as Virginia's lieutenant governor in the 1990s, was his party's nominee for governor in 1997 and later served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
He campaigned as a tested leader, touting his work to protect federal workers, promote clean energy and regulate artificial intelligence. He had the support of Virginia's Democratic political establishment and Democratic-aligned interest groups, while facing opponents who pitched themselves as anti-establishment, generational change agents.

By a slim margin, Virginians voted in April to approve a referendum that allowed for a special redistricting process. The referendum was sparked by a partisan redistricting process kicked off by Texas and picked up by other largely Republican states, before some Democratic states joined. However, after a bitter fight and a narrow victory for Democrats, who largely favored redistricting, the Supreme Court of Virginia voided the referendum results on procedural grounds, leaving the state's districts unchanged.
Republican Tony Sabio, who will face the Democratic Primary victor, lags behind every other candidate in fundraising. He faces long odds in the effort to unseat Beyer. In the three-way Arlington County Board race, incumbent Matt de Ferranti leads his Democratic challengers James DeVita and Julie Farnam in fundraising.
