Arlington Public Schools Alter Monday Schedule Due To Expected Severe Weather

Arlington Public Schools adjusted its hours Monday due to severe thunderstorms and a threat of tornadoes.

ARLINGTON, VA — Ahead of the severe weather that's expected to pass through the region, Arlington Public Schools schools and offices will close two hours early on Monday.

A CODE 3 was issued on Sunday, which means all schools will dismiss two hours earlier than their regularly scheduled dismissal times.

Severe thunderstorms posing a threat of tornadoes, heavy rains, damaging winds with gusts up to 75 mph and an eventual change to snow are all possible Monday as a powerful storm moves into the D.C. region from Sunday night into Monday, forecasters say.

"All after-school and evening activities are canceled, including extracurricular activities, athletics, field trips, recreation programs and community use of school buildings," according to the APS alert. "Afternoon Extended Day is also canceled."

If conditions become unsafe for early dismissal, students will be kept at school until it is deemed safe for their releasee. APS will update families if this happens.
