Arlington School Could Be Renamed For Interracial Couple (ICYMI)

ARLINGTON, VA -- An Arlington high school may drop half its name -- which currently honors a Confederate general -- and replace it with the name of a pioneering interracial couple, according to a report.

NBC 4 reports that a committee appointed by the Arlington County school board is recommending that Washington-Lee High School be renamed Washington-Loving.

That would mean the school would drop the "Lee," which honors Confederate general Robert E. Lee, in favor of Mildred and Richard Loving, the Virginia couple who mounted a legal challenge that prompted the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the state's law against interracial marriage in 1967.

The committee also proposed a second option, which would rename the school Washington-Liberty, according to the report.

The school board has already decided to remove Lee's name, and will discuss the proposed new names at a Dec. 20 meeting.
