AUGUST SHOWS at GALLERY UNDERGROUND

Focus Gallery: "Making Their Mark: Art Brut" Main Gallery: August Members Show

Dates: July 28 - August 23, 2014
Opening Reception: Friday, August 1, 2014, 5-8 p.m.

Arlington, VA - In the Focus Gallery during August, Gallery Underground presents
“Making Their Mark: Art Brut” in partnership with Purple Art, an art therapy program that
works with the unique cultures both of individuals with disabilities, and of military members and their families. Translated as “raw art,” Art Brut describes artwork created without the influence of classical art or culture. These artists lack formal training and live outside the cultural mainstream, creating what is also known as “Outsider Art.” It may be considered creative expression in the purest and most primal form.
This exhibition debuts artists with disabilities from Service Source day centers
(servicesource.org), a leading nonprofit disability resource organization that provides a range of customized services to individuals with disabilities and wounded veterans. In partnership with Purple Art, opportunities are created for artists to overcome severe and profound challenges in order to express themselves and explore possibilities. In some cases, the art has been created for the first time with little or no assistance.
Partnering with Purple Art on this project, many Alliance members have directly supported this exciting exhibit through generous donations of framing materials and volunteer time to curate, frame and mount the show.

Gallery Underground also features a new exhibit of members’ work in the Main Gallery,
including sculpture, glass, ceramics, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and mixed media.
Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202, this visual arts
venue is sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance (AAA), in partnership with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) and Vornado/Charles E. Smith to showcase the work of established and emerging regional artists.
Gallery Hours: M-F 10am - 6pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm. Metro accessible. Parking is available in metered spots on nearby streets and in public garages, which are free all day Saturdays and after 4pm on weekdays.
