Ballston's Carpool Restaurant Shuts Down for Good

Carpool is no more in Arlington, but it will be reopening in the next county over.

ARLINGTON, VA — After 20 years in Ballston, the end has come for local hangout Carpool restaurant, which is moving to Fairfax County. Carpool, which sits in the middle of a high-rise development boom currently underway in Ballston, had entertained patrons with a sports bar, pool tables, and sports paraphernalia since opening in 1995.

But demands for new offices and apartment buildings in the area have won out, and Carpool will make way for new construction after development company Penzance bought the bar's adjacent building back in 2014. In 2016, the developer exercised an option to purchase the Carpool property, and will erect a 22-story apartment building in its place.

But if you miss Carpool, you won't have to go too far. The bar already has a second location in Herndon, and they will relocate the Ballston location to a space in Fairfax County's Fair Lakes area sometime this summer.

Closing night took place on Monday, April 3, with a celebration of baseball's Opening Day. Washington Nationals fans packed the bar to watch the Nats win 4-2 over the Marlins.
