About The Braden James Fund

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma or DIPG is the deadliest pediatric cancer. 90% of children diagnosed with this incurable disease pass away within two years and less than 1% survive five years. The Braden James Fund was formed in honor of its namesake who passed away in 2022 at 5.5 years old after an 18 month battle with the disease. The Fund helps children and their families battling pediatric brain cancer, including DIPG, cope with the pain of this journey through a three-pronged approach: PLAY, ADVOCATE and CURE.

With your help, funds from last year’s race significantly improved the quality of life for pediatric cancer patients and advanced research for treatments. Here are some highlights:

Funding a Child Life Specialist at Children’s National Hospital, tripling their capacity, to enhance emotional support for pediatric brain tumor patients.

Installing RADLIX radio-transparent screens in Sibley Memorial’s radiation treatment rooms so that patients can watch movies during treatment. These screens help to reduce the need to sedate pediatric patients', and to reduce their anxiety, for radiation therapy.

Funding research on M-RNA vaccines, the microbiome and brain cancer, CAR-T cell immunotherapy, and adverse side effects from trial drugs at research institutions in DC, Florida, Seattle, and San Francisco.
