Looking for a gentle, effective way to improve your balance, flexibility, and calm?

The Teal Center in Arlington is offering a 4-week Qigong and Tai Chi series led by Dante Baker, a wellness coach and holistic healing arts practitioner who has been featured on FOX 5 DC and serves the Arlington community through movement, mindfulness, and healing.

This series combines two time-tested practices into one flowing experience:

Yang 24 Tai Chi is a short, graceful sequence practiced slowly with smooth weight shifts, relaxed joints, and an upright spine — incorporating foundational martial arts movements while keeping you in a calm, meditative state. Tai Chi is a type of Qigong, where "qi" means energy and "gong" means work or mastery.

Eight Brocades (Ba Duan Jin) is a set of eight simple Qigong movements that coordinate gentle stretching with calm breathing. Rooted in Chinese medicine, martial arts, and philosophy, Qigong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy.

Practiced together, they feel like a blend of moving meditation and whole-body maintenance. The effort level is light to moderate with a focus on ease rather than strain. Early sessions often bring a noticeable sense of calm and a loosening of shoulders, hips, and back.

Benefits Include:

  • Balance and stability — better control during weight shifting, stepping, and turning
  • Mobility and flexibility — a more comfortable range of motion in hips, spine, shoulders, and ankles
  • Leg strength and posture — stronger supportive muscles and improved alignment
  • Stress reduction — calms the nervous system through paced movement and breathing
  • Improved circulation — a warm, energized-but-relaxed feeling
  • Better focus and sleep quality — enhanced body awareness that supports daily routines
