Arlington Writer and Illustrator Publish Best-Selling Children’s Book
Arlington, VA - Mona the Mermaid: Mona Stalks a Jackal – a children’s early chapter book written by Carol Stevens and illustrated by Claire Brady, both Arlington residents, has just concluded a successful book launch on Amazon with the book ranked as a #1 Best Seller.
The book is written for children ages four to 10 – the magical period when they can follow the plot of an early chapter book, whether it is read aloud to them or they read it themselves. The book is set on the Lake Erie shores of Crescent Beach, Ontario.
Mona the Mermaid: Mona Stalks a Jackal is the story of a young mermaid who lands on Crescent Beach following a violent storm. She discovers that although the creatures of Crescent are nice, they aren’t happy.A jackal terrorizes them by day and haunts them by night. Mona wants to help her friends. But the first time the mermaid meets up with the jackal, her beautiful tail is punctured. And it hurts!
In Book One of the Mona the Mermaid series, this young mermaid learns lessons about honesty, friendship and the two sides to most stories.
"What could be better than a story about a mermaid and her animal friends! You learn about Mona’s relationships with her different animal friends and see the contexts in which they develop. You learn about caring for your friends, listening carefully to them, and behaving with loyalty. What a lovely book!!"
- Reviewer Marie Flowers
An longtime Arlington resident, Stevens is a former reporter and editor with publications including USA Today, The Detroit News, The Buffalo Courier-Express and the Baltimore Sun.
Mona the Mermaid stories have been told for generations by the Stevens-Brady family. It’s no surprise, then, that Carol’s adult daughter, Claire Brady, who also lives in Arlington, brought to life Mona and the creatures of Crescent Bay through her illustrations.
When she isn’t writing children’s books, Carol teaches creative writing to adult learners with the Arlington (VA) Public School System.
The book is available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats.
