Join us for an immersive two-day workshop focused on the unique challenges and rewards of painting a child’s portrait in oils. Through instructor demonstrations and guided studio practice, students will learn how to capture a child’s likeness, personality, and expression with confidence and sensitivity.
Each morning will begin with a 2-hour portrait painting demonstration by the instructor, covering the entire painting process from drawing and composition to color mixing, brushwork, and finishing techniques. Following the demonstrations, students will work from a live, clothed child model while receiving individualized instruction and feedback. There will be lots of model breaks because we are working with a 10 year old.
Throughout the workshop, students can expect engaging discussions on materials, techniques, artistic decision-making, and portrait painting traditions. Special attention will be given to color mixing using both brushes and palette knives, developing accurate skin tones, understanding value relationships, and creating a convincing sense of form and light.
Whether you are new to portrait painting or looking to strengthen your skills, this workshop offers a supportive environment to deepen your understanding of oil portraiture and create a meaningful painting from life.
Coffee, tea, bagels and other light fare will be available each morning to help you get started. Free parking is conveniently located directly in front of the studio.
This class is limited to 9 students, so please register early. This is a great opportunity to get one-on-one instruction from Teresa Oaxaca. Please note that Art House 7 is a two-story studio without an elevator. This workshop will be held on the second floor. If you need assistance carrying supplies upstairs, a staff member will be happy to help.
