Charles (Charlie) Binns passed away on February 11, 2018 at home with his family. Charlie was a native of Arlington and is survived by his wonderful and loving wife of 35 years Mary, 5 children (Charles, Mary, Michael, Debra and Christen), 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Now for those reading this who do not know Charlie, let me tell you a little about him. When Michael was 5 years old, Charlie took him to his first teeball practice. Upon arriving at Tuckahoe Elementary School, they were greeted by a throng of children milling all over the hill. Charlie and Michael made their way through the crowd, sat on the hill, and waited for a coach. They saw a tall gentleman with a graying beard surrounded by bags of equipment. He had been eyeing the crowd. Time passed - no coaches. Hmm. The players were getting pretty antsy. Still no coaches. Then the man with the equipment announced that he was Doc Bonaccorso (deceased) and president of the league. That said, he walked up the hill, counted out 13 children, said to Charlie: "You look like a coach" and handed the bag of equipment to him. Charlie picked up that bag and never looked back, coaching in the Arlington Babe Ruth League for the next 25 years. He also served as president of the league for almost 10 years. Charlie and the entire family spent most spring/summer seasons on the fields of Arlington. He had a great run and so very much loved this greatest of games. "There's nothing greater in the world than when somebody on the team does something good, and everybody gathers around to pat him on the back." - Billy Martin
We will be having a celebration of Charlie's life on April 22 at Algonkian Park, Pavillion 3, Sterling, Virginia from 1 - 5 pm. Please bring along a dish for sharing.
