'Commonwealth Joe' Coffee Shop Opens Flagship Location in Pentagon City

The owners of "The Java Shack" in Courthouse are behind the new endeavor.

ARLINGTON, VA — Pentagon City has been going through quite the dining boom lately, and now you can add a new coffee shop to the list near the Whole Foods that just opened up.

Commonwealth Joe has opened its brand new headquarters in The Bartlett, a new luxury residential building with 699 apartments at 520 12th Street South. The people behind the coffee shop are the same ones who run The Java Shack up in Courthouse. The owners got started in 2012 by launching their own coffee products and featuring them at farmer's markets.

"Over ten years ago, a coffee roaster and her teenage son worked together at a coffee shop in Culpeper, Virginia," according to Commonwealth Joe's website. "Fast forward to 2012, when that guy and three friends roasted in their garage a few dozen bags of craft-roasted coffee for pour-overs at local farmer’s markets.

"Before long, we were on shelves in dozens of specialty stores, featuring bags of single-origin coffees from all over the world," the website continues. "We began kegging 'Nitro Cold Brew Coffee,' biking the kegs to farmer’s markets, and installing them in high-tech offices around the region. We also started supplying the indie coffee shops in the area that wanted to work with an up-and-coming roaster."

After that, they took over "The Java Shack," Arlington's oldest coffee house, and now Commonwealth Joe.

"The key elements of our approach stay the same: outstanding single-origin coffees, cutting-edge Nitro Cold Brew Coffee, and friendly baristas who know your name," they say.
