ARLINGTON, VA — Commuters who access Metro at Pentagon City will find one of the station's entrances closed on Monday, as work begins on a nine-month construction project to replace the station's four entrance escalators.

Both entrances to the Pentagon City Metro Station will need to be closed at different times during construction, with the east side of South Hayes Street being the first on Monday.

Metro contractor KONE will be installing new and more durable escalators at the station. Rather than doing one escalator at a time, crews will tear down and replace the two escalators at one entrance. This will allow them to complete the construction in a more timely fashion.

One entrance will always be open during the project's duration, which customers will use to enter and exit the station. Work on the east side of the South Hayes Street entrance is expected to continue through December.

Pentagon City will be the sixth station to receive new escalators in connection with Metro's seven-year, $179 million escalator replacement project. When the work is all done, the Metro system will have 130 new escalators. The project is funded through Metro’s Capital Improvement Program, which receives dedicated funding from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Later this year, Arlington County will begin work on the installation of an elevator on the west side of South Hayes Street, which will provide access to the Metro and retail shops for customers with mobility needs. The new elevator is scheduled to be finished by 2023.
