The Washington-Lee Varsity Volleyball team (2-1, non-tournament play) defeated McLean (1-2, non-tournament play) 3-1, Monday, in their first home game of the season because of water damage to the gym. The Highlanders took the first game, but the Generals answered with three consecutive wins.
"We played out of our minds," W-L head coach John Delaney said. "We just had a tournament on Saturday and the things you saw today did not happen. There was no hesitating, they just looked like they wanted to defend their court. Even in the first game that we lost, I didn't think we lost—it looked like we won—so I was happy with even that loss."
The Generals played in Saturday's Herndon Invitational, but were unable to earn any wins.

Senior outside hitter Rebecca Jones was the defensive star of the game.
"I'm probably most excited about how we came back from all the losses and struggles on Saturday to win against a team that I don't think we expected to beat," Jones said.

After losing the first game to McLean, Jones said they had to know they wanted to win, give it heart and put it away. She said they focused on their defense and serving for the rest of play.
"Our center Erin Fox, she's our leader," Delaney said. "She's a quiet leader but she's a very, very good setter who is very soft spoken but she made all the right choices today, and that's what set the tone."
The Generals' communication with each other on the court and obvious team chemistry attributed to their 3-1 win.
"I was really happy, I knew that McLean was a really good team after watching them on Saturday, and I thought they played well, but I think they felt our energy and kind of took a step back," Delaney said.
Parents, peers and faculty members, including Principal Gregg Robertson and Director of Student Activities Carol Callaway, cheered the Generals on and added to their energy.
"It's a great night for the Generals to have our first home game and end with a victory," Callaway said.
Fresh off this exciting win, W-L travels to Mount Vernon on Wednesday before returning home against J.E.B. Stuart on Monday.
