Patch editor Mark Hand was outside the school Thursday afternoon, talking to parents, as the evacuation got underway. One parent told him that they received a text from their child before they received the text message from the school.

None of the parents gathered outside Yorktown knew exactly why the lockdown was declared.

A 10th grader told Hand shortly before 4 p.m. that students were not told what happened and why they were evacuated. She said she wasn’t afraid.

It was the first lockdown of school year at Yorktown. Her mother received both a text and email about the lockdown and was able to pick up her daughter at the school.
