Major Road Closures Around the Pentagon Next Weekend

The 2016 Arlington Police, Fire and Sheriff Memorial 9/11 5K race will result in closures throughout Crystal City as well.

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Police will be shutting down numerous streets around the Pentagon and throughout Crystal City on Saturday, Sept. 10 for the 2016 Arlington Police, Fire and Sheriff Memorial 9/11 5K race.

It's the 15th straight year the race has happened, with the first race begin in 2002 in memoriam of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and in New York City.

"The Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial Race was born from an idea to start a road race after two Arlington County Police Officers had returned from a similar road race in Buffalo, New York," their website states. "The first Arlington 9/11 Race was held on September 7, 2002, with 2600 runners, and raised approximately $40,000. Since its inception, the Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial Race has had over 30,000 runners cross its finish line and has raised over $600,000 for 9/11-related charities."
