Man Charged In Ballston Malicious Wounding After Victim Seriously Hurt

ARLINGTON, VA — A 45-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after Arlington County police said he seriously injured another man following a verbal dispute near Ballston.

Officers responded at about 8:38 p.m. July 19 to the area of North Nelson Street and Fairfax Drive for a reported assault. According to Arlington County police, the victim had been walking away after a verbal dispute when the suspect caught up to him and allegedly struck him.

Police said the victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Responding officers broadcast a lookout for the suspect and located him across the street from the scene, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Felony Charge Filed

Police identified the suspect as Matthew Vernon, 45, of an undetermined address. He was charged with malicious wounding and held without bond.

Court records show the felony charge was filed Monday in Arlington General District Court under Virginia Code § 18.2-51, which classifies malicious wounding as a Class 3 felony. Vernon remains in custody and is represented by the public defender's office. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31 at 11:30 a.m. after his arraignment was continued Monday.

Under Virginia law, a Class 3 felony carries a potential prison sentence of five to 20 years and a fine of up to $100,000 upon conviction. Vernon is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
