Man Dies in Arlington County Jail

A 40-year-old man died in the Arlington County Detention Facility Thursday, police said.

ARLINGTON, VA — A 40-year-old man died in the Arlington County Detention Facility Thursday, police announced.

Bennie Turner was released Thursday morning as a result of a court ordered furlough for an ill family member, police said. He returned from his court ordered furlough on time, and returned to his housing unit after being processed back into the jail, police said.

A few hours later, Turner was found unconscious in his cell, police said. Deputies and medical staff began immediate resuscitation efforts after finding him non-responsive. Arlington Fire & Rescue units arrived and transported Turner to the Virginia Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m., police said.

His family was notified of his death late Thursday night.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office and, following standard procedure, the death is being investigated by the Arlington County Police Department.
