Man Leaves Cruel Note for Hispanic Waitress in Va.: 'We Only Tip Citizens'

HARRISONBURG, VA — A nasty individual in Harrisonburg not only stiffed a young waitress but also wrote a note on the receipt falsely suggesting that she was in the country illegally.

"We only tip citizens," the tip line reads on the receipt. The waitress was 18-year-old Sadie Karina Elledge, who was born in America and is of Honduran and Mexican descent, according to The Washington Post.

It infuriated her grandfather, John Elledge, who posted the receipt on Facebook and angrily called the person who wrote the note a "complete and total piece of dung." Elledge is white and taught English to children in a bilingual school in Honduras, where he met his wife, Iris.

The Post reported that the man who wrote the note returned to the restaurant, and Elledge came to confront him. The man was furious that the last four digits of his card had been shared online, and Elledge took him to task for insulting his granddaughter — for which the man didn't seem to have much remorse.

As of Monday afternoon, the picture had been shared nearly 800 times. Lots of people chimed in to rip the person who signed the receipt.

"It is despicable to mistreat wait staff," wrote Susan Hagen. "People show their character in how they treat people who can't fight back. It is despicable to mistreat a young person who is doing honest work."

Added Regal Ross: "People don't realize how much [expletive] like this is left for servers. After they wait on weirdos for $2.13/hour, they are left with representation of their guests' mental issues rather than a tip."
