Massive 2016 Air Force Cyling Classic Will Shut Down Arlington [VIDEO]

Thousands of cyclists, including some of the top athletes in the world, will descend on Arlington this weekend.

Hope you don't have to drive in Arlington this weekend, because that could prove to be difficult.

The 2016 Air Force Cycling Classic will stretch all the way from Crystal City up to Rosslyn and Clarendon on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 in an all-day event both days that will mean lots of road closures throughout the eastern half of the city, according to a police statement.

If you're in the race, use Metro, police advise. If you're not in the race and need to get around in the area -- well, you should probably use Metro as well. You also won't be able to park in many places, so be on the lookout for temporary "No Parking" if you do opt to drive, as illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed or towed.

The event starts June 11 with the Air Force Association Cycling Classic’s Clarendon Cup, which "showcases a form of cycling involving a series of high-speed bike races that take place on a 1km course on city streets," according to the website. "The Clarendon Cup is known as one of the most difficult criterium races in the U.S. due to technical demands of the course and the quality of the participants."

The day will begin with a number of amateur races and then a women's Pro/Am race, with a kids' race starting at 11:35 a.m. A half hour later, the pro men's teams will race for 100 laps.

On June 12, riders will start bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Air Force Association Cycling Classic's Challenge Ride, "which offers a closed course open to cycling enthusiasts of all abilities, from casual amateur to serous racer. Bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded for those who can complete 2, 4 or 6 laps within the 3 hour course closure."

Riders must be off the course by 10 a.m., and then it will be time for the main event of the day.

"Sunday’s featured event is the Men’s pro race that will include some of the top pros in the world, and is the second day of racing for Pro/Am teams competing in the weekend’s Omnium competition," the site adds. "The race will be held immediately following the Challenge Ride. Participants in the Challenge Ride will also be invited to ride as part of Team Sabre, in support of the Air Force Association’s Wounded Airman Program. Other activities throughout the day will include the Corporate Challenge, the Armed Forces Cycling Challenge, the Congressional Challenge and the women’s and men’s amateur races.
