Motion of the Heavens: Galileo and Newton

The Friends of Arlington's David M. Brown Planetariums host their final weekend for the 2017-18 school year

From May 18-20, the Friends of Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium hosted their final weekend of the 2017-18 school year titled, “Motion of the Heavens: Galileo and Newton”. On Friday May18, there was a screening of the full dome show “Explore”. On Saturday May 19, Sir Isaac Newton and Galileo Galelei visited the planetarium followed by a screening of the full dome show “Two Small Pieces of Glass”. On Sunday May 20, there screenings of the full dome shows “One World One Sky” and the “Magic Treehouse: Space Missions”.

“It seems now that in the 21st Century you all have small little ‘books’ that you can pull out of your pockets and get vast amounts of information from,” said Sir Isaac Newton portrayed by Dean Howarth. Mr. Howarth’s Sir Isaac Newton and Mr. Raphael’s Perrino's Galileo Galelei – accents and all, who came to the David M. Brown Arlington Planetarium through a time machine, and playfully discussed their legendary lives in Astronomy and Physics. After discussing their lives and their scientific contributions, the two opened up their discussion to both take questions and ask questions of the children in the audience – in some instances challenging them to be on the forefront of the next era of space exploration.

The Friends will host special events at the David M. Brown Planetarium one weekend every month until the end of the school year. Each weekend will be geared towards increasing STEM education/awareness for all ages and will feature a specific theme.
