National Donut Day was created by the Salvation Army in 1938 as a way to honor the organization’s “Donut Lassies” who supported troops on the front lines during World War I.

The Donut Lassies came to be in 1917 when the Salvation Army wanted to find a way to provide spiritual and emotional support to soldiers fighting in France. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and baked goods.

After discovering that baked goods would be difficult to serve due to the conditions of the huts and limited resources, two volunteers began frying donuts in soldiers’ helmets.

The women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops returned home from war.

National Donut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June.
