NoVA, DC Weather: Hot, Humid With Chance Of Thunderstorms Into Friday

A hot and humid day is on tap for Northern Virginia and D.C. with heat indices as high as 105 degrees, the National Weather Service reports.

VIRGINIA/DC — A hot and humid day is on tap for Northern Virginia and D.C. on Thursday, with heat indices as high as 105 degrees, according to forecasters.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are also possible Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, weather experts warn.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the NWS forecasters warn.

Some heavy downpours are possible and perhaps some isolated damaging wind gusts, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

Friday will likely feature a repeat of Thursday's weather, with humidity remaining on the high side and showers and storms likely to pop up during the afternoon. Downpours can be expected in the strongest storms, with a marginal risk of locally severe wind gusts, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

"We may see a scattered storm or two Thursday evening, but the better chance for more widespread storms returns Friday," WUSA9 forecasters said. "We will be monitoring for a Weather Watch Alert on Friday, with scattered showers and storms. Some of the storms may be severe as a cold front moves into the area Friday."

There's only a slight chance of storms over the weekend, mostly in central and southern Virginia. According to the National Weather Service, expect mostly sunny skies on Saturday and partly sunny skies on Sunday.

"What really looks good is the weekend, with just enough cooler and drier air filtering in from the north to take the edge off the heat," the Capital Weather Gang reported Thursday. "So make your outdoor plans now!"

The D.C. area is running quite far behind its normal number of 90-degree days, according to AccuWeather. Although 40 typically occur every year, only 20 90-degree days have been observed so far this summer in D.C.

"Temperatures in the 90s have been recorded as late as October, however, and there is still plenty of time for the nation’s capital to equal or surpass its normal number of 90-degree days, especially with several anticipated beginning next week," AccuWeather said.
