PHOTOS: Drivers Stuck for Hours on Icy Roads

Thousands of DC metro area residents commuting home Wednesday night were stuck for hours on untreated icy roadways.

Despite a warning about the coming snowfall earlier Wednesday from the National Weather Service, VDOT said it decided not to pretreat roadways, saying freezing temperatures during the day would have made conditions more icy. VDOT responded at about 9 p.m. on Twitter saying:

Drivers took to Twitter to express their frustration over getting stuck in the extremely slippery conditions and bumper to bumper traffic for hours Wednesday night, with no sight of plow trucks or salt trucks from VDOT until past midnight in some circumstances.

Some drivers were still on the roads at 3 a.m. Some drivers said that the George Washington Parkway was drivable.
