Police: Pedestrian Struck, Killed Wednesday Night Crossing Leesburg Pike
Man was not in a crosswalk while crossing the road near Crossroads Shopping Center, police said.

A Fairfax County man was struck and killed Wednesday night while crossing Leesburg Pike in front of the Crossroads Shopping Center, according to a report from Fairfax County Police.
The man, identified as Abdullah K. Sheikh, 36, was struck around 10:18 p.m., by a Toyota Corolla driven by a 30 year-old woman from Columbia, Md.
It appears Sheikh was not in a crosswalk and was not wearing reflective clothing when he was struck, police said.

Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are investigating the crash; neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors on the part of the driver of the Toyota, according to police.
Over the past three years, more than 400 pedestrians have been struck and injured in crashes on Fairfax County roadways, police said.

Fairfax County police urge walkers, motorists, and bicyclists to pay close attention to pedestrian safety rules, such as crossing with a light and using a crosswalk. Police note that both pedestrians and motorists are equally responsible for observing laws and safety practices related to pedestrian right of way.
