Animal control officers gave a strong warning to the owners after taking the dog to a shelter briefly.

UPDATE 2:47 p.m.: A spokesperson from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington responded to a request for comment with the following: "An Animal Control officer arrived on scene shortly after the police removed the puppy from the car. Officer Corcoran immediately took the puppy to the vet, where he was found to be healthy and un-harmed. The puppy was then brought back to the shelter until the owners could be contacted. When the owners arrived, they were given a strong warning and educated about the dangers of leaving dogs in parked cars in the summer. The puppy was then returned to its owners."

The weather was fairly mild on Wednesday, but temperatures can rise fast in a parked vehicle with its windows rolled up. A small black puppy was suffering in the heat when Arlington County police officers sprung into action.

As for whether the driver of the car faces any charges, police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said that animal control officers with the Animal Welfare League of Arlington deal with issues relating to the welfare and control of animals in the county, and the puppy was transferred to their care.
