ARLINGTON, VA — A carjacking suspect suffered serious injuries in connection with an officer-involved shooting that took place in the Rosslyn area mid-day on Friday, according to Arlington County Police.

Around 11:30 a.m., a Metro Transit Police Officer was reporting to the Rosslyn Station when he saw a carjacking taking place at N. Nash Street and Fort Myer Drive, according to ACPD spokeswoman Ashley Savage, during a 1 p.m. news briefing.

After the suspect fled on foot, the MTPD officer began a pursuit, until he saw the suspect attempt a second carjacking at Kent Street and 19th Street N. The officer fired his service weapon, causing serious injuries to the suspect from a gunshot wound.

"He has been transported to an area hospital, where he continues to receive medical treatment, but again, at this time, it remains an ongoing investigation," Savage said. ACPD was investigating both carjackings and the officer-involved shooting.

No one else was injured in the incident, according to Savage. No information was available about whether the suspect was armed.

MTPD has concurrent jurisdiction with ACPD, as well as law enforcement in Washington, D.C., Prince George's and Montgomery counties in Maryland, and Loudoun County in Virginia, as well as the cities of Falls Church and Alexandria, Chief Michael Anzallo said, during the briefing.

"We cover a pretty big area in the DMV," he said. "The officers are on foot primarily, and they transverse the rail stations and the bus routes, but we also have mobile officers. This officer was doing his job. He was on route to the Rosslyn Metro Station to do a station check, and he happened upon this carjacking."

MTPD officers are trained and certified by law enforcement agencies in Virginia and Maryland, as well as the District, according to Anzallo.

"They go through the longest training academy in this area," he said. "It's a 39-week academy plus 10 weeks of field training. So, in total, almost a year to get certified as an officer. They go through extensive firearms training and use of force training. So that's one of the things that we do train them on. If you do have to use your weapon to protect your life or somebody else's, you know, but you have to know your target and what's beyond it."
