WMATA had a less than stellar day Wednesday on the first day of its 5th "Surge" on the Orange and Silver lines, but things went from bad to worse when flames were spotted underneath a Metro car during rush hour in a moment captured on video by multiple riders.
"Just offloaded at East Falls Church," writes Twitter user Ava, who posted a video of the incident. "Visible flames under metro car and lots of smoke."
User Samuel Damashek also posted video, reporting that it was an Orange line train that was producing the smoke. Riders were offloaded from the train.

The Washington Post reported that the smoke was due to a brake malfunction on one of the 1000-series railcars, which have had plenty of problems in the past.
The incident happened at around 4:20 p.m. and result in the offloading of a full train of passengers at the East Falls Church station.
