Servers at Renowned Arlington Restaurant Write Nasty Insults on Customer's Receipt: Report

A dispute over a family-style bowl of rice at Peter Chang reportedly resulted in some rude behavior from servers.

Servers at a prominent Arlington restaurant ridiculed their customers through their receipts after a dispute over rice turned ugly, one customer is claiming.

Four diners were eating a meal this weekend at Peter Chang in Arlington, a restaurant created by a very popular restauranteur that was nominated for James Beard awards this year, but a dispute over a family-style bowl of rice resulted in servers insulting them through the receipt, according to a Washington Post report.

In notes added to the ticket through the point-of-sale system used by the restaurant, one comment said "im a plad a******" -- a reference to the fact that three of the four diners were wearing plaid. A second comment says "i have a small penis."

The diner, named "Matt" in the report, had lived in Beijing during the 2000s and was surprised when the server brought out a family-style bowl of rice instead of individual rice bowls. The server offered to return with individual rice bowls, but they declined.

That seemed to be the end of it, until the check arrived. First, after being asked to split the check four ways, the server replied -- apparently sarcastically -- "that's totally how they do it in China," according to the report. And then they saw the check.

The comments likely were left there by mistake. Manager Qian Cheng was quoted as saying that the servers often do that despite his repeated attempts to get them to stop, and that he was apologetic about the incident.
