'Shirlie Lights Up the Village' Event in Arlington Delayed

ARLINGTON, VA — If you were hoping to head out to Shirlington Tuesday evening for some holiday cheer, you'll have to adjust your plans: Shirlie Lights Up the Village has been pushed from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6 due to the threat of rain.

Weather.com is calling for a cold and wet day on Tuesday, with a 90 percent chance of rain. Due to the delay, NBC 4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell may no longer be available to emcee the event.

The 2016 Shirlington Light Up the Village event is a big one, and will result in the closure of Campbell Avenue and S. Randolph Street in downtown from noon until 10 p.m. on that day. Officials are urging people who live or work in Shirlington to consider other forms of transportation on that day.

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. with a "Live Holiday Production" by Signature Theatre featuring the U.S. Army Chorus. Then, a tree lighting ceremony takes place at 6:40 p.m., with photos with Santa and horse and
carriage rides following soon after.

At 7 p.m., the Bishop O'Connell Choir performs, and The Lovejoy Group provides live holiday music.

The event will also feature free face painting and balloon twisting, as well as specials from local merchants.

You can bring your non-perishable food items to donate at the event, which will benefit the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
