Death Reported in Smoke Incident at L'Enfant Plaza Metro
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, according to Metro. One fatality, 84 hospitalized, reports say.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into smoke at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station on Monday afternoon.
Eighty-four people were hospitalized due to the smoke-filled Metro tunnel, including one patient who died, D.C. fire department spokesman Tim Wilson told The Washington Post.

The incident suspended Green and Yellow line service at some stops through the rest of the day and into the night. Service impacts were possible again Tuesday morning. Riders are advised to check wmata.com prior to traveling.
As the evening commute was getting into full swing Monday, Yellow Line riders had to find alternate routes, either using the Blue Line or bus service.

The station was evacuated and closed in the mid-afternoon as Metro Police and fire department investigated the issue. Metro activated tunnel fans to ventilate the area.
The first responder vehicles had blocked roads, according to DDOT, impacting surface traffic around 7th and D streets SW on Monday.
